Speed Up My Mac: the AI cleanup prompt

This is the prompt from the "Mac Running Slow?" video. Claude checks disk space, memory and swap, finds the biggest storage hogs, shows you the sizes, and only deletes caches that rebuild themselves. Anything else, it asks first.

Works with: Claude Code, Claude Desktop with a filesystem/terminal MCP, or any AI agent that can run terminal commands on your Mac.

How to use it

  1. Open Claude Code (or Claude Desktop with Desktop Commander) on the Mac you want to clean.
  2. Copy the prompt below and paste it in.
  3. Read the size report before you approve anything. Say yes only to the items you are sure about.
  4. Restart your Mac at the end to clear swap memory.

The prompt

My Mac is running slow and I want to free up space and improve performance. Please do a careful cleanup in this order:

1. DIAGNOSE
- Check free disk space (df -h /), swap usage (sysctl vm.swapusage) and memory pressure (memory_pressure).
- List the top 15 processes by CPU and by memory.
- Tell me in plain English what looks unhealthy (disk over 85% full, swap over 5 GB, constant high CPU at idle).

2. FIND THE STORAGE HOGS (measure only, delete nothing yet)
Show the size of each of these that exists:
- ~/Library/Caches (and the 15 biggest folders inside it)
- ~/Library/Messages/Attachments and ~/Library/Messages/Caches
- ~/Downloads, ~/Desktop, ~/Movies, ~/Documents
- ~/Library/Developer (CoreSimulator, Xcode DerivedData) if present
- ~/.npm, ~/.cache, pip/Homebrew/Docker caches if present
- ~/Library/Application Support (the 10 biggest folders)
- ~/Library/Logs and the Trash
Then give me a table: location, size, what it is, and whether it is SAFE (rebuilds itself) or REVIEW (my real files).

3. CLEAN THE SAFE STUFF
Ask me once for permission, then clear only caches that regenerate on their own: app caches in ~/Library/Caches, Messages caches, npm/pip/Homebrew caches (brew cleanup), Xcode DerivedData, unavailable iOS simulators, old logs. Never touch Messages Attachments, Photos, Documents, Desktop or Downloads in this step.

4. REVIEW LIST
For the REVIEW items, list the 20 largest files over 500 MB (find ~ -type f -size +500M) with their paths and last-opened dates. Suggest which ones I could move to an external drive or iCloud. Do not delete any of them unless I name the file.

5. PERFORMANCE
- Show login items and background apps that start with the Mac, and tell me which ones are usually safe to turn off.
- If any process is using heavy CPU for no reason, explain what it is before suggesting I quit it.

6. VERIFY
Show before and after free disk space, a short summary of what was cleaned, and remind me to restart to clear swap.

Rules: always show sizes before deleting anything. Never use sudo without asking me. Never delete anything that is not a regenerating cache without my explicit yes.
