Filling eight council seats is the hard part
Most Kelowna voters have a sense of who they want for mayor. The council ballot is the one that stumps people — you pick eight names from a list of more than thirty, most of whom don’t have the profile of a mayoral candidate. That’s exactly where a match tool earns its keep: it surfaces the council candidates whose stated positions line up with yours, so your down-ballot votes are as considered as your vote for mayor.

A high match percentage means a candidate’s public positions align with your answers on these 18 issues. It isn’t an endorsement, and it can’t capture everything — character, competence, track record, and the issues we didn’t ask about all matter. How does the Kelowna Election Compass work?▼
You answer 18 statements about the real issues facing Kelowna — housing density, homelessness, property taxes, policing, transit, development, downtown, climate and more — on an agree-to-disagree scale, and can mark the ones that matter most to you to count double. We compare your answers to each candidate's researched positions and rank how closely they match, including your top eight council picks since that is how many councillors you vote for.
Where do the candidate positions come from?▼
Every position is drawn from public sources — candidate campaign websites, interviews with Castanet, KelownaNow and Kelowna Capital News, a standardized candidate questionnaire, and for sitting councillors their actual recorded votes in City of Kelowna council minutes. Every single score carries a citation you can click to verify. Where a candidate has no public record on an issue, we leave it blank rather than guess.
Is this tool biased toward any candidate or party?▼
No. Zio Advertising does not endorse any candidate and takes no position on the race. The tool simply matches your answers to sourced candidate positions. Municipal candidates in Kelowna do not run under political parties. Any candidate can review and correct how they are represented — see the methodology page.
Why are some candidates not ranked?▼
Some candidates — especially late entrants — have very little sourced public record on the issues yet. Rather than rank them on two or three data points and mislead you, we show them separately as "not enough public record." We have invited every candidate to complete our questionnaire, and verified answers will fill these gaps before election day.
When is the Kelowna 2026 election?▼
General voting day is Saturday, October 17, 2026, with advance voting days before it. Kelowna voters elect one mayor, eight city councillors and four school trustees. Check kelowna.ca/election for voting locations, dates and ID requirements.
